Song Prompt: Home by Michael Buble (click song title)

Ziva David stared out at the night sky. She was walking alone on the Haifa beach as was her habit since returning to Israel.

She had missed the Israeli sky; the stars seemed closer to earth here than they did in DC.  She felt as if she could simply reach out her hand and pluck one from the heavens. It was during this time that he was foremost in her thoughts.

She had known for quite some time that she was in love with NCIS Special Agent Tony DiNozzo.

She had resisted as long as possible with rule number twelve and the fact that she could be recalled to Israel at anytime, it was fuel for her resistance. But, she had known she was fighting a losing battle.

When he fell in love with the object of his undercover mission, she felt her heart break, but she also felt relief in the hopes that if he loved someone else then she would able to free her heart of him. She was wrong.

When both the love affair and the mission blew up his face, she felt her heart break into even smaller pieces because of the devastation wrought on his heart. That is when she fully realized she would never get over loving him.

Since returning to Israel, she had missed him terribly and daily had to stop herself from calling him to say I’ve been keeping all the letters that wrote to you, each one a line or two and all ending with I love you.

But she knew that she would never call just as she would never send the letters, she was fated to love a man that she would give up everything for and could never be with.

Tony DiNozzo stared out at the night sky. He was alone on the massive deck of the U.S.S. Seahawk.

Because he was NCIS and not active duty Navy he was not subject to the same lights out rules as most of the men and women on board. But, because the US Navy never slept, there was a small but efficient night crew, but it was a case of if you don’t bother them, they won’t bother you and he could count on peace and quiet. It was during this time that she was foremost in his thoughts.

He had known for quite a while that he was in love with Mossad Officer Ziva David.

He resisted as long and as hard as he could. There was rule number twelve to consider as well as the fact that her liaison position could be terminated at anytime. Hell, he had even fallen in love with another woman in an effort to get Ziva David out of his system.

That was a DiNozzo sized mistake.

He regretted hurting Jeanne the way he did, but in his heart he knew that she was meant was Tony DiNardo because Tony DiNozzo was simply unavailable. When Jeanne had offered him a second chance after the operation went to pieces and she had discovered the truth about this deceptions, he had considered it only for the briefest of moments. He knew that he would never leave his job, his team, Ziva for Jeanne.

He was sad about the way things had turned out with Jeanne, but he was even sadder that it had to happen at all.

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness and knowing that he would probably never have a relationship with the one woman that he would give it all up for was his.

Tony DiNozzo was in a funk.

No one had heard from Ziva in months and that just wasn’t like her.

After everything that had transpired between them he wasn’t all that surprised that he hadn’t heard from her, but he was worried that she had not even tried contacting Abby or McGee.

What was even worse was that all attempts at contacting her had been stonewalled by Mossad, even McGee’s considerable hacking abilities weren’t enough to find her.

It was like she had fallen off the face of the planet and she was God knows where doing God knows what. Tony had a bad feeling about it, a very bad feeling.

Drinks with McGee was supposed to take his mind of  Ziva, but it wasn’t working – at this point in time, anything short of a nuclear blast wasn’t going to be enough to budge his thoughts from her, so when McGee made a comment about tight leather pants cradling his butt, Tony only half heard him.

“It’s not normal, you know” said Tony

“I was joking” answered McGee thinking that Tony was talking about the leather pants.

Tony chuckled wryly “Not you and the pants McGee but, I would pay to see that by the way. It’s not normal that we haven’t heard from Ziva”

Tim knew he was walking a thin line when the conversation turned to Ziva as Tony was highly sensitive about all things concerning Ziva these days. “I am sure she is fine, Tony. It’s Ziva. She will call when she’s ready”

“See that there is my point exactly. Everyone just assumes that because it’s Ziva, that she is fine. Well, I don’t think everything is fine. I am worried and I am going to find out what’s going on even if I have to take on Eli David and the whole of Mossad to do it”

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you” said McGee

“Yeah, and whose gonna stop me? You?” snapped Tony

“Look Tony, I am your best friend always sticking up for you…even when I know you’re wrong” said Tim while grabbing Tony’s elbow to keep him from walking away “but you don’t have to do this alone. Let me know what you need”

McGee just happened to glance out the window on his way to the evidence locker. It was pouring down rain so he surprised to see Abby sitting alone under her favorite black lace umbrella on a bench.

Borrowing an umbrella from the maintenance closet, he walked outside to see if she was ok.

“What are you doing out here Abby? It’s freezing. It’s practically sleeting for pete’s sake”

Abby looked up, Tim could see that she had been crying, as her eye make-up was freely flowing down her cheeks mixed with tears and rain. Wiping her face quickly with her hands, she answered “Really? I hadn’t noticed that”

Forgetting about the cold and rain, Tim sat down and wrapped her hug “What’s wrong?”

She laughed humorlessly “Well, if you asked what’s right – now that I could answer. Nothing”

Tim pulled her tighter and said “Ziva?”

Abby nodded against his shoulder and said “Ever since she died, it’s been like a dark cloud has descended. In some ways it’s worse than when Kate died. At least, we got to bury Kate and say our good-byes. With Ziva we didn’t even get to have a funeral. It’s like her death is this awful specter following us everywhere. I can’t get away from it; and Tony… poor Tony” sobbed Abby

Tim nodded his agreement and said “It doesn’t seem like it now, but it will get better. It won’t be the same as it was, but it won’t be as bad as it now. Nothing last forever” and as the rain stopped he finished his thought with “even cold November rain.”

Jimmy Palmer walked down the corridor of the private rehabilitation center with a spring in his step. Dr. Mallard was being released to go home today after several weeks of rehab to aid in the recovery from his massive heart attack.

Normally, a patient wouldn’t be released this soon after such a major health event, but Dr. Mallard was able to afford private at home care and he had an almost doctor at this beck and call.

Walking into the private room, Jimmy saw that Ducky was packed up and sitting up in the wheelchair waiting for him.

“How are you today Dr Mallard?” inquired Jimmy as he walked around behind the chair to grab the small valise lying on the bed.

“It’s a great day to be alive” answered a chipper Ducky

“Yes it is” nodded Jimmy as he grabbed the handles of the chair “Are you ready for a new adventure?”

“Absolutely, my boy” chuckled Ducky “you know that there is an old Scottish proverb that says that each day’s regrets die with the setting sun and that new beginnings are born when it rises”

“I like that” offered Jimmy as he pushed his friend and mentor down the corridor for what would hopefully be the last time.

“As do I.” said Ducky “life as we know it is fragile and much too short to live with regrets. We must seize each new day and the opportunity it brings.”

“A good life philosophy if I ever heard one” agreed Jimmy.

“Yes and one I fully intend to embrace from here on out. It’s a new day with new opportunities and no room for regrets”

“I know what you’re planning” said Leon as he walked into his office and shut the door behind him.

“Oh yeah? What’s that?” frowned Gibbs as he took a chair opposite Vance’s desk

Vance walked around his desk and sat down “That you are planning to give Harper Dearing a dose of the Leroy Jethro Gibbs brand of justice”

Gibbs put his game face on and then answered “We can’t afford to be innocent; we need to stand up and face the enemy, head on.”

“And I don’t disagree with that” countered Vance

“Then what’s the problem?”

“The problem is making a plan for it to play out that way. Some could consider that… less than… professional”

“This stopped being professional the day he killed people with that bomb blast”

“I understand your anger Gibbs, believe me I feel it too. But, we have to approach this situation with the utmost care. We can’t be seen as working a vendetta here. No one wants this bastard more than me, but we have to be able to justify our actions. All of our actions”

Gibbs huffed as he stood “The only justice in this whole mess is if Dearing pays for his actions. How he pays – well, that will be up to him. I won’t do anything you can’t fix Leon, but know this – if he tries to harm anyone else, then all bets are off”

Vance stood, looked Gibbs in the eye and said “I wouldn’t expect anything less”

Gibbs was sitting at his kitchen table drinking a cup of coffee when he heard the unmistakable sound of DiNozzo’s mustang pull into his driveway. He knew that his gut was legend around NCIS, but the truth was that he simply paid attention to what was going on around him.

He didn’t look up from the case file when Tony entered but only pointed at the chair across the table from where he sat. He heard Tony pull the chair out and sit down. Gibbs could feel the tension rolling off Tony and knew that the conversation that he been rehearsing in his head for the better part of two weeks was about to happen.

“Boss, we need to talk about me and Ziva” opened Tony

Gibbs looked up from the file into the tired eyes of his best agent and surrogate son and answered “No need, Tony. I know and it’s ok. I just have one favor to ask”

If Tony was surprised at the answer, he didn’t show it and simply asked “What’s that Boss?”

Gibbs had never felt more proud.

“Wait until after we take down Dearing”

Tony nodded once and rose to leave. As he reached the door, he looked back at his boss whose attention had already returned to the case file “What changed your mind?”

Gibbs looked up, smiled sadly and said “Disaster has a way of remaking our hearts. That and rule number fifty one.

It was standing room only in the viewing room. In the adjacent interrogation room Gibbs was interviewing Harper Dearing.

Those involved felt almost cheated as the arrest was anti-climatic at best. Dearing had walked up to the guard shack at the Navy Yard and turned himself in earlier that morning.

After a thorough search for explosives (no one taking any chances this time), He was finally led into the room where Gibbs was waiting for him.

Gibbs was the first to speak “Looks as if a peaceful night’s sleep is on the agenda for tonight knowing that you are off the streets.”

Dearing smiled and answered “One man’s peace of mind may be another’s despair in these our enigmatic times”

“Well if our peace brings you despair, then it’s all in a day’s work for me”

“But that is where you are wrong Agent Gibbs.  It is I who will have the peace and you who will have the despair. The knowledge that you could have stopped me before so many died will haunt you and yours until your own deaths. That is my peace. That is what enabled me to surrender myself to you without regard for punishment. I will go to prison or to the gas chamber satisfied that my mission was a success. Neither myself nor Evan will ever be forgotten by you or the Navy again.”

Gibbs rose to leave and tossed out the parting words “The only names that we will remember are the names of those who died protecting and serving this country. Yours will be forgotten, as will your sons. Soon you will only be known as the crazy man who blew up a bomb”

Ziva looked at the thin white gold band that circled her finger and smiled.

A year ago, she would not have dreamed that this day would have been possible. There had so much heartache on this journey that at times she doubted she would survive it. But perhaps, the destination was all the more sweet because of the pain. She knew that she and Tony cherished what they now had together because they almost missed the opportunity.

It was the near death of their much loved friend Ducky and the near destruction of their home - NCIS headquarters that finally broke down their emotional walls far enough for them to see what they were going to lose by not acting.

It didn’t happen overnight, there were still many hurdles to overcome along the way but the bumps were less painful knowing that the other returned their feelings. And slowly, sometimes achingly so, they built a solid foundation on which to build a new life and home.

And now she was standing before God, family and friends exchanging marriage vows with her soul mate, with eyes only for him, she spoke softly “I come to you with open arms, nothing to hide, believe what I say. So, here I am with open arms, hoping you’ll see what your love means to me…”

Tony DiNozzo looked at his bride and thought I look at you I see the love there that’s sleeping and can’t imagine his life without her.

Barely a year ago he had not dreamed that this day would ever be possible. There had been so much heartache on this journey, but it made the destination all the sweeter. If any two people knew what it was like to suffer for true love’s sake, it was he and Ziva.

There were many times when he thought the pain would break one or both of them, but by the grace of God they were able to hold onto that love even when they didn’t know they had it to hold onto.

It was the bombing of NCIS headquarters and Ducky’s heart attack and subsequent recovery that gave them the courage to grasp at the happiness that fate was persistent to give them. Because no matter how hard they tried to walk to away from whatever they had, fate conspired to bring them together again. Perhaps that was the way it worked with soul mates.

Even after they professed their love for each other, the relationship didn’t happen overnight, there still much talking and healing to be done.   But, the knowledge that she loved him as much as he loved her was more than enough to start building something permanent.

And here they were, just a year after that fateful day waking up in their marriage bed.

As awful as that day was and he would still give his right arm if he could turn back the hands of time to change it, he was deeply thankful for the beauty that rose from the ashes.
