Nell stared at the plus sign on the pregnancy test and knew this was the moment where everything changed for her and Callen. Neither one of them was prepared for this, nor had they wanted this. Not now. They weren’t even an official couple yet. She quickly left the bathroom, grabbed her purse and hurried to work. On the drive in, she spent the time wondering how to tell Callen. She also wondered how he would react. Would their embryonic relationship survive? She had to laugh at the word “embryonic,” considering the secret she held,
Callen wasn’t in the office when Nell got there. The entire team had been sent out into the field to work a case. Even Eric wasn’t there. The only one was Hetty. Nell didn’t hesitate. She went right to Hetty’s office and told her everything. Hetty never questioned the relationship. She simply advised Nell to tell Callen as soon as possible and told her if she needed anything, to just ask. Then she made Nell a cup of tea.
Just as they were finishing their tea, Kensi hurried into the room. “Callen’s been shot,” she stated baldly. Nell jumped to her feet, her hand covering her mouth, her eyes wide.
“How serious is it, Ms. Blye?” Hetty asked calmly, reaching across the desk to squeeze Nell’s other hand.
“He’s fine, but he weighs more than you would think he does,” Deeks complained as he helped Callen limp into the room, Callen’s arm around Deeks’ shoulder and Deeks’ arm around Callen’s waist. Deeks lowered Callen gently into a chair in front of Hetty’s desk. “Sam’s down at the boat shed with the shooter”
“I’m fine, Hetty,” Callen said. “It was just a flesh wound in my leg. We stopped at the Emergency Room and got it stitched up. The doctor told me to stay off it for a day or two, but I’ll be fine.”
Nell didn’t care who was around or what they thought. She dropped to her knees in front of Callen and took his hands in hers, her eyes filled with tears. She was just grateful that he was alive.
