This episode is a mixed bag for me. There are parts of it that I really liked, then there were parts of it that I really hated. I’m going to try and go in order as the show unfolds, but I might.get a few things mixed up. It’s been a while since I’ve see Dead Man Talking.
The first thing that irked me is that Gibbs blew off Pacci’s concerns. Gibbs would never do that, no matter how rough his day had been. I realize that if Gibbs had paid attention to Pacci, there would be no episode, but it seems to me they could have found another way to lead into the story without having Gibbs act out of character.
I loved the way McGee figured out where the house was located by using the streetlights and house numbers. I’d love to have a job where I could do that kind of “magic’ and get paid for it.
On to a part that I really liked - the stakeout. Gibbs, Kate, Tony and McGee all acted exactly like I would expect them to if they were stuck on a stakeout. The practical jokes, the sloppiness, all of it was hilarious and fun to watch. It was so in character for Tony to go over and insinuate himself into Amanda Reed’s life just because she was so hot. Of course, it was a piece of cake for him to get a date with her, never suspecting her real identity.
I also enjoyed Abby’s research and eventual finding that Amanda Reed = Commander Voss. Her silly action outside the elevator trying to get Gibbs to guess what she had found was amusing. Abby is my favorite character and I love her geekiness and her humor, so this was a plus for the episode. It needed another one because:
This is where it went south for me again. Once Abby had figured out that Amanda was actually Commander Voss, things got silly in a fifth-grade prank sort of way, and voyeuristic. Tony was the only one not in on the huge joke. He had his date and made out with Amanda/Voss innocently. Then all hell broke loose and he found out he’d been (tee-hee) making out with a man.
Poor Tony’s manly ego took a big hit that night. It was made all the worse when Kate leaned over his desk and very deliberately asked, “What was it like tonguing a guy?” This scene highlighted for me the main reason I never like Kate. The rest of the team bantered with each other and picked on each other, but there was always the understanding that it was all in fun. With Kate, she always seemed to be going for the jugular. She was trying to humiliate Tony, not joke around with him.
Overall, this was not a good episode for me. I could only give it 2 ½ CafPows for the stakeout scenes and for Abby’s work in finding out Amanda Reed’s real identity.

I really liked Kate up to this point, but then she just became downright cruel. I hated how she treated Tony in the subsequent episodes, although I agree with Kathi that SWAK was an exception and I liked her in that one.
Too bad they ruined her character, but she had a hero's death and that kind of redeemed her for me.

Date: 2012-09-25 12:07 pm (UTC)We see it every now and again with Ziva, it ruined EJ's character, and Jenny was a bitch on wheels at times.
The only character that has really escaped that is Abby, but they do her just as much harm with that whole tired woman/child thing.
The strong female character writing has seemed to have gotten better in the last couple of seasons, but it still sneaks in there and it makes me see red!
