Rocket Man was quite an exciting episode for me. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the entire episode, but when I found a majority of it on You Tube, I knew I had to do this one. It was the first time we see Eric undercover. He was quite nervous, as I would be if I were to do something like that for the first time. But he nails it. I would say with a bit more coaching he’d become quite good, as he was in the episode ‘Honor’ as the TSA agent. I’d really like to see him do that again in the future.
The scene where Eric is inspecting the rocket test chamber where the victim was murdered was quite shocking when I first saw it, and I was expecting the worst. I think I recall saying ‘No, not Eric too!’ It was quite believable. But thankfully he gets out of it all right, though I imagine he’d be in worst shape than he was when he came out of there. Regardless, I respect him for going right back out into the field after his brush with death. No one would have blamed him, since he’s not a field agent, but the character is resilient and has a good head on his shoulders.
This is also a great team episode. Nell and Eric worked great together as well but I really liked how the others worked together to help each other out, especially when Callen, Sam and Nell saved Eric just in the nick of time. And Hetty and Nell were very supportive behind the scenes. That’s one reason why the team is more like a family.
Another great scene I really liked was when Eric returns to Ops after his assignment is finished, and he and Nell reflect. They really click in that moment. Regardless of whether their partnership becomes anything more in future seasons, I’ll always love how they get each other, yet at the same time there’s a competitive nature between the two of them. It’s a good balance.
I give this episode a four out of five. The plot was easy to understand, the acting and the story were solid, and there was significant character development. I was confused on how Eric was able to recover so quickly after almost being ‘frelted’, but then again it is television, so reality takes a creative license a lot. Plus, Eric is one of my favorite characters, so it was easy for me to like it so much. If you haven’t seen it, or haven’t in a while, I would recommend it.
