“So, Timmy, I hear you’ve got yourself a new girlfriend. Who is the lucky lady?”
They had been working in silence for the last twenty minutes, trying to decipher the code to access the killer’s computer. The sound of Abby’s voice made McGee jump.
“Girlfriend? Who…who said I had a girlfriend? It’s no-one, really. She’s just a, a… friend-friend, not a girlfriend, you know?”
“Oh, really? Well, that’s not what I heard,” Abby replied. “I heard you even kissed her on the second date.” She turned to fix McGee with a steely stare. “So, McGee! Which is it? A friend-friend, or a girlfriend? Inquiring minds need to know!”
McGee gulped and missed a few keystrokes. “I…I told you…Audrey is just a friend-friend. Nothing more.” He turned his head to hide his blush.
“AH-HA! Audrey! So she does exist! I knew it!” Abby crowed.
“I told you, she’s just a friend-friend. I just kissed her on the cheek. It was nothing. Seriously. Do you think we can get back to work now, Abs?”
The room was silent for a few more minutes. “Who told you about Audrey, anyway?” No answer. “Abby?”
“Not right now. I’m concentrating,” Abby answered. “Besides, if she’s just a friend-friend, it doesn’t matter, does it?” Something slowly dawned on McGee.
“Abby, you weren’t jealous, were you? I mean, when you thought I had a girlfriend?”
Now it was Abby’s turn to miss a keystroke. “Don’t be ridiculous, McGee! I was just curious, that’s all! Jeez, can‘t I even ask a question without you jumping to conclusions?” she said with annoyance. McGee looked crestfallen.
“Sorry, Abby. Let’s get back to work.” Abby felt bad for snapping at him. It made her feel like she had kicked a puppy.
“Well, anyway, Timmy, since you don’t have a girlfriend and I know you’re not busy tonight, you wanna come over? I had the casket relined and I have the latest Brain Matter CD. We could listen to it together. Oh! Oh! I also have a killer recipe for Bloody Marys! We could make some and listen to Brain Matter and you can admire the new upholstery. How ‘bout it, McGee? Sound like a plan?”
McGee suddenly felt slightly giddy. Who cared if he was a little unnerved by the casket? Who cared if he hated Brain Matter? And who cared if he hated tomato juice almost as much? Abby wanted him to come over tonight - a Friday night, no less.
“That…definitely sounds like a plan, Abby. What time? Should I bring anything?”
“How about seven-ish and you can bring sushi. From that place we went to before. I love their sushi.”
“Ok, great. I’ll be there. So…”
“Great! I’ll see you then. Now get out of here! Tony’s here. I think he needs you for something.”
“But what about the code?” McGee protested.
“Oh, I cracked that ten minutes ago. Now get going! See you later.“ Abby gave him a huge smile and a little peck on the cheek. McGee got up and saw Tony waiting in the doorway. They got on the elevator together and began the ride up.
“So, McLiar, what are you going to tell your girlfriend, Audrey? You have a date with her tonight - the significant ‘third date’ to be precise.”
“Pfft. Please! I can come up with some excuse. Abby asked me over to her place. That’s all that matters right now.”
