Special Agent Tony DiNozzo whistled as he walked into the bullpen. It had been a good week. D.C. area seaman and marines had managed to stay out of trouble so MCRT had caught no new cases and the hunt for Harper Dearing seemed to be winding down with the latest round of intelligence. The way Tony saw it; it was only a matter of days before they brought him in. If he had to guess he would say the planets had aligned themselves in such a way that good fortune was his to reach out and grab. He hadn’t felt this optimistic since… well, he couldn’t remember the last time he had felt this optimistic about anything.
Rounding the corner he was surprised to see Special Agent Stan Burley sitting at McGee’s desk talking on the phone. Stan looked up as Tony dropped his belongings at this desk and gave him a nod in the way of greeting. Tony returned the greeting with a nod of his own and proceeded to unpack his bag while Stan finished up his call.
“Stan the man! Wasn’t expecting to see you here. What brings you to this hemisphere?” quipped Tony.
Stan chuckled at the somewhat forced joviality from Tony, the air between the two of them had always been strained, but it was even more pronounced since they had worked together in Italy in a few weeks ago where Stan had shown some interest in Tony’s partner, Ziva.
“Just giving Director Vance my final report on my case related injury,” replied Stan.
“Glad to see you have recovered, but don’t they have telephones for that?” questioned Tony.
Stan pushed down the impulse for a wise crack and instead replied with a wink that he knew would cause Tony some discomfort “Well, it’s been awhile since I was in DC and thought this would be a good time to combine business with a friendly visit Speaking of friends, where is the rest of your team?”
Tony felt old jealousies rise to the surface. As much as he hated to admit it, he was jealous of Stan’s easy rapport with the rest of the team. He remembered trying and failing to step into Stan’s shoes when he first joined NCIS and he still of sort of resented the fact that everyone welcomed Stan with open arms.
“They should be here any minute. I am sure Gibbs will be happy to see you, but I am not sure he is worth crossing oceans to see. Abby, maybe.” supplied Tony knowing that Stan and Abby were friendly while he was stationed in DC.
Stan laughed “I have already paid her a visit and she bamboozled me into going to a concert with her tomorrow night. A band called Brain Matter.”
Tony smiled his first genuine smile since seeing Stan and said “Good luck with that."
Tony’s smile faltered as Stan continued talking “I was actually hoping to catch up with Ziva, see if she wanted to have dinner while I was in town.”
Tony felt the air being sucked out of his lungs and had to cough a few times to cover his discomfort. He was further dismayed when he noticed Stan’s knowing look.
“Dinner with Ziva huh? Does she know you’re in town?” questioned Tony.
“No, I was hoping to surprise her,” answered Stan.
Tony was relieved to hear that Ziva hadn’t been hiding Stan’s visit from him. Not that she was obligated to tell him, but it reassured him nonetheless.
“Yeah, well. You’re full of surprises today, Stan.”
Stan gave Tony another knowing look before responding with, “I thought I saw something between you two in Italy. If so, you need to tell me now.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I think you do and if it’s what I am thinking it is, you might want to do something about it pretty soon.”
“What? Are you giving me advice now?”
“Friendly advice. If you aren’t going to make your move, then someone else will. It might even be me.”
Tony’s reply was interrupted by the ding of the elevator announcing the team’s arrival and Stan’s subsequent movement toward it, but he couldn’t help but hear Stan’s parting words…
“You should tell her.”
