Notes/Warnings: What if Shannon and Kelly had lived?

Jackson Gibbs opened the door to welcome his son, daughter-in-law and his grandchildren. It was Thanksgiving and the house smelled of roasting turkey and pumpkin pie. Shannon gave her father-in-law a kiss on the cheek and Jethro gave him a hug just before he was swarmed by his granddaughter and grandson. “Hey, you two! Get in here! I have something I want to show you,” he told them as he closed the door behind his family. Kelly and Jack demanded to know what it was and grabbed his hands to follow him towards the den. Shannon and Jethro just smiled at each other and followed the leaders.

“Now, I know it’s a little cold this time of year, but I also know how much the two of you like to stargaze, so I bought a telescope and set it up in here. You can look at the stars through it later when it gets dark. Then, this summer when you come to visit, we can take it outside and get a really good look at the sky. The moon, the planets, all that astronomy stuff. You might even be able to teach me something about it all. How does that sound?”

The two children were thrilled. Even though it was only three o’clock, they insisted on looking through the telescope and seeing what they could find closer to the ground. They watched birds and squirrels and even peeked into the neighbor’s house until Jethro caught them and made them quit.

While the children played, the adults sat in the living room, drinking beer and talking. Thanksgiving at Jackson’s house had become a family tradition for the past six years. It had started with Jack’s first Thanksgiving and had continued ever since.

“So, how’s it going with that fancy government job down there in Washington?” Jackson asked his son as they waited for the turkey to cook.

“Dad, it’s not a fancy government job. I’m a cop for the Navy. The job’s going just fine. I have a great team working for me. If you come down for Christmas, you can meet them.”

After the meal, Shannon and the kids watched a movie while father and son went out to Jackson’s workshop behind the house. Jackson made wooden toys for the kids in town every year for Christmas. He and Jethro worked on some now as they talked some more. Neither one was given to expressing their feelings easily, so working together like this and just being with each other was their way of expressing their love and affection. They worked in companionable silence for a while, talking occasionally and just enjoying each other’s company. Both liked working with their hands and both liked spending time together. They cherished these times since they saw each other rarely, due to Jethro’s job.

Finally, Jackson said, “Jethro, I’m not one for much yakking or sappy talking, but I just want you to know how much I enjoy it when you, Shannon and the kids come back to Stillwater. I thought I’d lost you after your mother died, so having you around, well, it makes me happy. Having my grandkids here makes an old man feel young again. I appreciate you doing that for me.”

Jethro said nothing, just gave his father a hug.
